Description

A large Russian gilded silver & shaded cloisonné enamel kovsh, Master EPR, Moscow, 1899-1908. Of traditional oval form with a hook shaped handle & raised prow, the exterior enameled with brightly colored blossoms & foliage in shades of red, blue, & green against a stippled gilt ground & applied with numerous gilded silver beads, multi-color florals against a stippled gilded ground, the enameled decoration extending onto the oval foot, with cable borders. Struck with maker’s mark & 84 standard. Dimensions: 2 ½ in.H x 6 ⅜ in. L (6.4 x 16.2 cm).

The Moscow silversmith & enameler who used the Cyrillic initials EPR as a maker’s mark remains unidentified, but numerous examples of the quality of the workshop’s production can be seen in both public & private collections.
