A Russian carved folk Art partial chess set and box, probably Sergiev Posad, circa 1910-1930. The chess set carved and painted as folkloric figures in costumes of white or black, the figures possibly based on Persian or Ottoman warriors, contained in an oak box, the interior divided into four compartments, the hinged lid decorated with a scene of a romancing couple on a country lane, the outer panels with floral ornament. The interior of the lid stamped ‘Made in Russia’ in blue ink, an export mark used before and after WWI. Comprising 21 chess pieces (both kings and queens present).
