A Russian plate from the second military service series with gold borders, Imperial Porcelain Factory, St. Petersburg, 1879. Circular, the cavetto painted with a view of a soldier of His Majesty’s Own Convoy, Muslim Unit in the field, shown standing or on horseback in their distinct uniforms based on dress of the Caucasus region, the gilded border polished & engraved with a band of berry laurel & oak leaves with the Imperial State Seal, the underside with gilded foot & border, with black overglaze Russian inscription reading ‘His Majesty’s Own Convoy, Muslim Unit’ (Собственный Его Величества конвоя. Мусульманский) & ‘From a design by Balashov I. Ivanov 1879 (с карт. Балашова Н. Иванов 1879 г.)’, with green stamped factory mark with the Imperial cypher of Alexander II. Diameter: 9 5/8 in. (24.5 cm).

This second series of military plates with gold borders designed by artist Karl Karlovich Piratsky(1813/15?-1871), who himself created some of the designs on which the military series plates were based. The central images are painted after a series of uniform studies by Pyotr Ivanovich Balashov (1815-1883) commissioned by the Imperial War Ministry.
