A Russian porcelain figure of a balalaika player, Gardner, circa 1850. Depicting a bearded peasant man with black hat, a tunic, and striped trousers tucked into tall boots playing a balalaika, his head turned as if by a gust of wind, the oval base molded with a border of scrolling, gilt ornament surrounding a naturalistically painted ground. The underside with the figure of St. George slaying the dragon and the word Gardner in Cyrillic capitals impressed in the paste, also with the number 8 impressed in the paste, probably a model number. Height: 5 1/2 in. (14 cm).
