A European varicolor gold and silver-mounted tortoiseshell snuffbox, possibly French, second half of the 18th century. Of oval form, the hinged lid inset with an engraved portrait of Empress Elizabeth I (Elizaveta Petrovna) of Russia with a silver engraved ribbon reading Elisabet I de Russie, the border inset with a pattern of scrolls, shells, and blossoms in varicolor gold and silver, the sides and underside of the snuffbox floral sprays in engraved varicolor gold and silver, with conforming pierced and engraved gold mount struck with French control marks. Dimensions: 1 5/8″ h x 3 5/8″ w x 2 5/8″ d (4.1 x 9.2 x 6.7 cm).
