The English name pansy is derived from the French word pensée (thought) & the flower is regarded as a symbol of remembrance, particularly of one’s family or beloved. Grand Duchess Xenia, like all members of the Imperial family, had learned to paint in watercolors as part of her education. She continued to paint throughout her life, mostly on cards & greetings to her family members.
