A Russian icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderwork with cloisonne enamel oklad (icon cover), circa 1900. The icon probably Palekh, showing the Bishop saint at half length, wearing richly ornament Byzantine style vestments, holding open the Gospels open with the Mother of God and Christ to his left and right; the cover with half-column borders enameled in shades of turquoise, translucent green, sky blue, opaque white, and red, the ground of turquoise filigree enamel with foliate pattern, the halo with conforming ornament, struck with Cyrillic initials SG for Sergey Gubkin or Semyon Galkin. 4 3/4 x 3 3/4 in. (11.8 x 9.6 cm).
