Description

A Fabergé shaded & cloisonné enamel tea glass holder, Feodor Rückert, Moscow, 1908-1917. The cylindrical body enameled with stylized tulips, pomegranates, daisies, & lilies in shades of iron red, cornflower blue, forest green, peach, coral, & turquoise against a speckled, pale green ground relieved by stylized foliage & unusual fields of transparent orange over foiled grounds, the lower border with stylized Greek key ornament in gilt filigree against a cinnamon ground, the shaped handle with stylized floral, foliage, & geometric ornament against a stippled gilt ground. The circular foot with the later inventory number 270. Height at handle: 3 5/8 in. (9.1 cm); width over handle: 4 1/2 in. (11.3 cm).

This tea glass holder is undoubtedly related to the tea pot & sugar bowl with similar shape & ornament now in the collection of the Walters Museum of Art (44.877). As curator Anne Odom noted, the design incorporates the stylized tulips & other blossoms of traditional Russian eighteenth-century enamels that had dominated his earlier work as well as a new sort of geometric & abstract ornament informed by the Wiener Werkstätte & international Art Nouveau. Most importantly, it exhibits the workshop’s n ew palette of darker, more complex colors, including a pure black enamel, as wellas extensive use of foil-backed translucent enamels.
