A cup & saucer from the Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich Service, Imperial Porcelain Factory, period of Nicholas I (1825-1855), 1848-1852. The scalloped bowl with ogee-shaped handle, the handle with the black double-headed Imperial eagle with raised wings used on the Grand Ducal naval standards & surmounted by the Grand Ducal crown, set against an entirely gilded ground within blue strapwork, a decoration that continues as the border around the entire bowl, the interior with strapwork motifs in gilt, emerald green, brick red, & black, the foot with gilded rim, marked on the underside with the pale blue Imperial cypher factory mark of Nicholas I & the gilt initials AK, probably those of a gilder. Length of cup: 5 1/8 in. Diameter of bowl: 4 1/8 in.
