Diameter: 9 1/4 in. (23.5 cm).
This service with a version of the double-headed eagle on the Imperial State seal used after the Napoleonic Wars was ordered in 1820 & described in archival inventories as the “Service with the Coat-of-Arms & a Gold Band” (Сервиз с гербом и золотым рантом).Several additions were made to the service & it was transferred to Gatchina Palace for use there in about 1855 & came to be known as the Gatchina Service (Гатчинский сервиз). The Gatchina Palace served as the primary residence for the Imperial family during the reign of Emperor Alexander III (r. 1881-1894) & for his widow, Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna, thereafter. The service received frequent use & additions were ordered once again during the reign of Nicholas II (1894-1917). For more on this service, seeT.N. Nosovich & I.P.
