Description

A Russian gem-set gilded silver three-handled loving cup, Ovchinnikov, Moscow, 1908-1911.The body of baluster form with flaring neck, chased & repoussé with three double-headed Imperial eagles within chased Usolk-style floral & foliate ornament against a matted ground, foliate scrolling ornament, the border above the eagles chased in imitation of woven rushes, the upper rim with six bezel-set cabochon garnets & with cable border, raised on three scroll feet, the lower border with the dedicatory engraving reading ‘William Wahl “Jolanda II” 1911’. Dimensions:9 7/8 in. H (25 cm).

Jolanda II, a nine-meter Finnish vessel built in 1911 & belonging to William Wahl, competed in the 1912 Summer Olympics which were hosted by Sweden. Twenty-four yachts entered from Denmark, Finland, Russia, France & Sweden, with races held off the Swedish coast at Nynäshamn in July 1912. The large cup might have been presented for a 1911 race that Wahl won.
