Description

A Fabergé gold & guilloché enamel pendant egg, workmaster Vasilii Soloviev, circa 1900; the body enameled in translucent strawberry red over a hatched ground. The suspension ring struck with workmaster’s initials & with 56 standard (equivalent to 14K). Height (without suspension ring) 1/2 in. (1.3 cm).
Fabergé workmaster Vasilii Soloviev (or Vasily Solovyev), a specialist in enameling on small & fine gold objects, was long identified in Western sources as Vladimir Soloviev. The incorrect first name seems to have been applied to him in English sources of the late 1930s & 1940s. Research has more recently shown that there was no silver- or goldsmith called Vladimir Soloviev working in St. Petersburg around 1900. There was, however, a Vasilii Fedorovich Soloviev who appears in Petersburg city records from about 1900 to 1910 & who Fabergé designer Franz Birbaum recalled in his 1919 memoirs discovered only in 1992. See the entry on Vasilii Fedorovich Soloviev inTatiana F. Fabergé, Eric-Alain Kohler & Valentin V. Skurlov, Fabergé:A Comprehensive Reference Book, Génève: Editions Slatkine, 2012,p. 269.
