Description

A Russian silver gilt, champlevé enamel, & niello toasting cup & tray, Ovchinnikov, Moscow, 1876. The tapering cylindrical beaker with everted rim & domed foot, the exterior decorated with views of the churches & palaces of the Moscow Kremlin on one side & the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in the other, both in oval cartouche reserved against a ground bright engraved with scrolling strapwork against a turquoise champlevé ground, the upper border engraved & enameled with an aphorism in Old Slavonic style lettering saying that one should toast one’s health by drinking from this good silver cup (Стопа серебряная добрая пить из нея на здравие), the lower registers enameled with brightly colored geometric ornament inspired by peasant embroidery, struck on underside with maker’s mark with Imperial Warrant, Moscow district hallmark dated 1876, & 91 silver standard (equivalent to 947.9). The circular tray of very heavy gauge, decorated with conforming ornament including a band of bright engraved scrolling strapwork against grounds of turquoise & navy blue champlevé enamel, the border with brightly-colored geometric ornament, the central reserve engraved with the Cyrillic initials M.B. in Old Slavonic style lettering. The tray struck on the underside with maker’s mark with Imperial Warrant, Moscow district hallmark dated 1876, & 91 silver standard (equivalent to 947.9). Gross weight of cup: 170 grams. Gross weight of tray: 228 grams. Height of beaker: 4 5/8 in. (11.7 cm). Diameter of tray: 6 1/4 in. (15.9 cm).
