Description

A Russian porcelain Easter egg by the Imperial Porcelain Factory, circa 1900, decorated with a deep purple-blue phlox blossom, probably one of the native variants of phlox Sibirica, together with an intensely colored coral red blossom with a purple-blue stripe, both depicted as isolated blooms with leaves in the manner of a botanical study, against a pale creamy yellow ground, the upper aperture with polished gilt star.Height: 4” (10.2 cm).
Spring’s new blossoms were a natural subject for painting on the Imperial Porcelain Factory’s Easter eggs & the ever increasing range of colors & tints developed in the 19th century allowed for detailed floral studies & copies of botanical prints with colors ranging from a soft, robin’s egg blue to intense shades of coral & red. The tints also allowed for greater depth & subtlety, as the range of blues & greens on the blossoms & leaves of the plants on this egg demonstrates. The images were most likely copied from one of the many volumes of botanical studies in the library of the Imperial Porcelain Factory.
