Description

A Russian porcelain plate, Imperial Porcelain Factory, Nicholas I period (1825-1855). The cavetto centered with a stylized blossom in iron red surrounded by a polish gilt band, the remainder decorated in an overall pattern of magenta, orange, yellow, or iron red stylized tulips, roses, & flowerheads & ciselé gilt foliage, all against an unusual matte black ground, the white shaped border similarly decorated against a sky blue ground, the shaped rim gilded. The underside with blue stamped cypher mark of Nicholas I. Diameter: 9 1/4″ (23.5 cm).The ornament is reminiscent of Persian or Mughal design & suggests that it could have been intended as a diplomatic gift, one of many Emperor Nicholas I exchanged with the Qajar rulers & dignitaries after 1830.
