Description

ARussian porcelain dinner plate with Imperial cypher of Alexander II from the service for the Imperial yachtDerzhava, designed by Imperial Court Architect Ippolit Monighetti, Imperial Porcelain Factory, reign of Emperor Alexander II (1855-1881), after 1871. The border with strapwork of maritime ropes arranged in the form of the double-headed eagles which had represented the Russian state since the sixteenth century, all against a green ground, relieved by the Russian orb (called Derzhavain Russian) & Alexander II’s Imperial cypher in Old Slavonic lettering, both against blue grounds, the cavetto with a band of braided rope within a green band. The underside with green Imperial cypher mark of Alexander II. Diameter 9 5/8 in. (24.7 cm).

Imperial Court Architect Ippolit Monighetti was responsible for the design of the interior of the Imperial yachtDerzhava; his duties included designing porcelain, glass, & silver services as well as the furnishings. Work on this porcelain service was begun in 1871 so that it would be ready for the ship’s launch in 1874. The decorative scheme cleverly combines the jeweled orb of Imperial state regalia for which the yacht was named together with stylized double-headed eagles formed from the sort of complex knotting of ropes essential to sailing. For more on this service, seeGeraldika na russkom farfore, S-Peterburg: Ermitazh, 2008, p. 127.
