Description

An unusual Austrian silver gilt & plique-à-jour enamel desk clock, Georg Adam Scheid, Vienna, circa 1900. The clock withwhite opaque enamel dial, black & red Roman Arabic chapter numerals, & pierced black hands, the gilded silver bezel cast & chased with floral ornament against a matted ground, the baluster-shaped frame on four arched feet enameled in bright blue, red, yellow, & lavender plique-à-jour enamel with applied gilt beads, the works visible at the back under a bezeled glass cover, stamped S+P 1340. Apparently unmarked, but certainly from Scheid’s workshop. Dimensions: 3 9/16 in x 2 5/8 in. (9 x 6.7 cm).

Scheid succesfully exhibited a number ofplique-à-jour clocks in the Austrian exhibit at the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago.
