Description

An antique Russian Art Nouveau silver vodka cup, probably Gerasim Mitrofanov, Moscow, 1899-1908. The oval shaped cup with whiplash handle, the shaped oval cup chased & repoussé with a scrolling vine with tulips, rose buds, & clover, & the interior gilded. Held in circa 1935 fitted box of the retailer Geneva located in Harbin & Hsinking (Changchun) in China. Struck on underside with maker’s mark & 84 silver standard. Weight: 59 grams. Dimensions: 3 1/4 in. w x 2 in. h. (8.3 x 5.1 cm).

Harbin & Hsinking (as Changchun was renamed when it was made the capital of the Manchukuo state in 1932) were located on the Chinese Far Eastern Railway. Both cities had large Russian communities dominated by Russian railway employees & their families. Most remained there until Soviet occupation in 1945 forced the community to flee to the western United States & Canada.
