Description

An extremely rare & magnificent Russian gilded silver, shaded cloisonné & guilloché pictorial enamel Easter egg, Feodor Rückert, Moscow, circa 1899-1908. This unique egg is decorated with two scenes with Paschal iconography in pictorial enamel; the front of the upper half is centered with a scene of the Empty Tomb immediately after the Resurrection of Christ, depicting two angels kneeling in adoration before the empty tomb draped with the discarded shroud, the upper portion of the opposite side enameled with a group of rooks in flight against a rising sun (the return of rooks in springtime is associated with Easter & often appears on Easter eggs). The rays of light are created in an unusual technique of spiral wirework on a modulated golden yellow & coral pinkguilloché enamel over a textured ground; the top of the egg centered with a cream colored star. The lower portion of the Easter egg is enameled with stylized polychrome flowers & abundant foliage in both shaded cloisonné & translucent enamel. Height: 2 1/8 in. (5.4 cm).
