Description

A very large Russian gilded silver & shaded cloisonné enamel charka, Feodor Rückert, Moscow, circa 1895. The lobed body decorated inside & out with panels of scrolling stylized multi-color flowerheads against alternating cream & olive grounds, the interior enameled with a scene of a battle between a griffin& dragon, the shaped trefoil handle with conforming decoration, with cable borders & raised on three ball feet wrapped in twisted gilt wires, the underside with scratched inventory number 7555 or 7556. Dimensions: 2 H x 6 W in. (5.1 x 15.2 cm).
Battles between griffins, symbol of the House of Romanov, & serpents or dragons, personifying evil, appear on many Russian style enamels made for members of the Russian court, including Emperor Alexander III.
