A diamond-set varicolor gold & enamel Imperial presentation snuffbox, probably Switzerland, first half of the nineteenth century. In Neoclassical taste, the oval case with hinged cover centered with a raised oval plaque enameled transparent royal blue over a radiating engine-turned ground & applied with a rose cut diamond set Gothic initial “A” surmounted by a diamond set Georgian royal crown in silver mounts, the plaque with red gold bezel surrounded by a band of twenty Old European cut diamonds (tested) within ogee-shaped gold mounts, all reserved over a cover enameled transparent royal blue over a radiating engine-turned ground within a border of opaque white enamel applied with floriated bands of varicolor gold & relieved by miniature crossed torches set with rose cut diamonds & suspended over recesses, the sides similarly decorated with transparent blue enamel over a wavy engine-turned ground relieved by columns of white opaque enamel applied with varicolor gold rosebuds & branches, with a band of chased acanthus leaf tips about the base, the underside enameled transparent blue over a radiating engine-turned ground. Apparently unmarked, with a collection inside the flange of the base, the exterior of the flange with French control marks for gold & silver. 1 x 2 ½ x 1 7/8 in. (2.7 x 6.3 x 4.8 cm).
