When Emperor Alexander II embarked upon the conflict that came to be known as the Russo-Turkish War in 1877, he decided that his sons, the Grand Dukes, would not be spared the difficulties of war. He was given command of Imperial Russia’s 12th Army & served under his brother, Grand Duke Alexander Alexandrovich (the future Alexander III), who was commanding Russia’s Eastern Detachment in the Balkans. He twice repelled attacks of Suleiman Pasha, for which he was awarded the prestigious Order of St. George, Third Class.
