A sepia chromolithograph of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich, circa 1887. The bust-length chromolithographshowing the Grand Duke, brother of Emperor Alexander III, in his general’s uniform wearing the Sash & Chain of the Order of Saint Andrew as well as the Order of St. George, Third Class at his neck & the Order of St. Vladimir with Swords, Second Class. Various other Russian & foreign awards are visible. With printed signature dated 1887 across the lower portion of the image. The reverse with later inscription identifying the sitter.

Dimensions: 6 1/8 x 4 1/4 in. (15.6 x 10.9 cm).

When Emperor Alexander II embarked upon the conflict that came to be known as the Russo-Turkish War in 1877, he decided that his sons, the Grand Dukes, would not be spared the difficulties of war. He was given command of Imperial Russia’s 12th Army & served under his brother, Grand Duke Alexander Alexandrovich (the future Alexander III), who was commanding Russia’s Eastern Detachment in the Balkans. He twice repelled attacks of Suleiman Pasha, for which he was awarded the prestigious Order of St. George, Third Class.
