A miniature portrait of Empress Anna or Elizabeth?? Finely painted wearing the blue sash & star of the Order of St Andrew, an ermine cloak, the smaller Imperial crown, & with her dark hair worn in two long curls over her shoulders. Contained in a gilt metal frame with strut & suspension ring. Dimensions: 3 3/8 x 2 3/4 in. (8.3 x 7 cm), not including suspension loop.

The miniature is painted to early 20th-century taste, suggesting it was made prior to World War I. In the pre-war period, Sergei Diaghilev & others organized a number of important exhibitions of historical portraits, reviving interest in historical personages of the 18th century.
